Peter Koutoujian
WALTHAM -- Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian confirmed Monday he's
considering a run for Democratic U.S. Rep. Ed Markey's long-held seat if
Markey
wins his bid to succeed former U.S. Sen. John Kerry.
"I believe it will be in the best interest of the commonwealth for Ed Markey
to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate," Koutoujian said in a
prepared
statement released through potential campaign spokesman Larry
Carpman, president
of Boston-based Carpman Communications, LLC.
"If that happens I would consider running to serve the people of the 5th
District in Congress."
Koutoujian, whose hometown of Waltham is in Markey's district, had a website
domain created in his name over the weekend. The site, registered as
www. koutoujianforcongress.com,
was
created by Waltham resident Tsoleen Sarian.
Sarian has served as Koutoujian's campaign manager during his re-election bid
for the Middlesex sheriff's post.
Koutoujian, 51, first served in the state Legislature in 1997 after a stint
as assistant district attorney. He was appointed in January 2011 to fill
the
term of former Middlesex County Sheriff James DiPaola, who resigned
and
later
committed suicide in November 2010.
According to Koutoujian's latest filing Monday with the state Office of
Campaign and Political Finance, he has about $14,939.60 in his campaign
account.
In his statement, Koutoujian also said his "primary focus right now is
serving the people of Middlesex County as sheriff."
